Meaningful Conversations & Community.
Black Iris
Social Club
-
When Black Iris moved to Broad Street we saw great potential in the space- an opportunity to join the Arts District in offering our unique take on activities and performances to the thriving Arts scene already being advanced by our neighbors. It quickly developed its own identity as a collaborative workspace. It became a laboratory of sorts. After hearing from our community that this was something they valued and wanted to support, we thought, “Why not create a club that fosters this idea? A space more of us can call our own?” And so we worked behind the scenes for a few years creating that space. A place to relax after work. A place where performances can happen spontaneously and unexpectedly throughout the week. A community cultivated and grown through its own constituency.

Black Iris Social Club is that idea come to life- a gathering place for artists, thinkers, friends, tinkerers, advocates, enthusiasts, and all who seek to share their experiences with others. And we’ve built it to be entirely different from that uptight, old-school idea of a social club that one may imagine. We’d like you to relax and let your hair down. No dress codes here. Members have the benefit of enjoying our 5,000+ square feet of club space for a variety of activities, including performances, exhibitions, games, libations, good conversation, and a few pleasant surprises along the way. Our facility, located in the heart of the Arts District in downtown Richmond, boasts a full-service bar for you and your guests.

Cigar Club
Black Iris Cigar Club is a unique offering for our Social Club Members. We have a fully stocked humidor, thoughtfully curated, and we offer some of our best rooms real estate for you to enjoy a fine smoke (cigars and pipe tobacco only) alongside a well-crafted cocktail from our excellent bar staff.
There aren’t many places you can enjoy a smoke indoors these days… Especially in such a great environment. We hold that this alone would be reason enough to join up.

About
our
Gallery
Gallery hours are First Fridays & by appointment only.
Black Iris is an artist-run laboratory for national, international, and regional artists working in a variety of media. Black Iris's multi-disciplinary activities aim to connect the local community to a growing constellation of thought strung together through creative acts. Black Iris presents community-focused activities, exhibitions, screenings, performances, lectures, experimental music events, parties, social interactions, and unexpected acts of imaginative expression. Through radical re-imagining, we see art’s potential to not only impact the singular viewer/participant but a neighborhood, a city, and a mode of thought.
Black Iris rejects the notion of high vs low art. This is a senseless construct. We encourage inclusion over exclusion. We build bridges. We value the exchange of ideas, culture, social perspectives, and psychological insights over the exchange of currency. Imagination is power, yet so many of the tools needed to kindle this radical form sit un-accessed, circulating only in small circles. Black Iris aims to reconnect disjointed publics and weave together new ways of community engagement, sensing, building, thinking, and acting.
